Commuting in Gangnam: Subway Lines, Travel Times, and the Major Employer Hubs

A foreigner's guide to commuting in and around Gangnam β€” subway lines, travel times to major employer hubs (Samsung, Hyundai, finance row), and which neighborhoods sit on which line.

By HavenLensΒ·May 13, 2026Β·8 min read

When a foreign renter asks us "where should I live in Gangnam," the first follow-up is always "where do you work?" β€” because commute distance in Seoul is measured in subway lines, not in kilometers. Two neighborhoods three kilometers apart can mean a ten-minute commute or a forty-minute one depending on which line connects them.

This guide walks through the subway lines that matter in and around Gangnam, the travel times to the major employer hubs (Samsung, Hyundai, the finance and tech corridors along Teheran-ro), and which neighborhoods sit on which line. If you know where you work, you can read this guide and shortlist where to live in about ten minutes.

A note: HavenLens lists rentals across Gangnam and surrounding neighborhoods with commute time to major employer hubs shown on each card. If you'd rather see listings already filtered by commute, skip the guide and jump to the search page.

The lines you'll actually use

Five subway lines and one express service do most of the commuting work in Gangnam:

Lines 2 and 9 do most of the heavy lifting. Line 3 handles north Gangnam. Lines 7, Suin-Bundang, and Shinbundang are specialty lines for particular routes.

Major employer hubs and how to reach them

Samsung Town (Samsung Electronics HQ, Samseong-dong)

Nearest station: Samseong (μ‚Όμ„±μ—, Line 2). Direct access via underground passage to the Samsung complex and COEX.

Travel times by neighborhood (one-way, including walks):

For a Samsung Electronics employee, Yeoksam, Samseong, or Cheongdam are the obvious neighborhoods. Yeoksam offers mid-range housing and a 10-minute commute; Samseong puts you walking distance; Cheongdam offers premium family housing with a 15-minute commute.

Hyundai Motor Group HQ (Yangjae and Apgujeong area)

Nearest stations: Yangjae (Line 3, for the new HQ) and Apgujeong/Apgujeong-Rodeo (Line 3 / Suin-Bundang, for older Hyundai facilities).

Travel times by neighborhood:

For a Hyundai employee, Apgujeong, Sinsa, or Cheongdam are the natural neighborhoods.

Teheran-ro corridor (finance, consulting, law, tech)

This corridor runs east-west through Yeoksam and Samseong. Companies on Teheran-ro include most large Korean and foreign consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), Korean banks, foreign law firms, and a substantial chunk of the Korean tech sector.

Nearest stations: Gangnam (Line 2), Yeoksam (Line 2), Seolleung (Line 2 + Suin-Bundang), Samseong (Line 2).

Travel times by neighborhood:

For a Teheran-ro worker, Yeoksam is the default.

Coupang HQ (Songpa-gu, Jamsil)

Nearest station: Jamsil (Line 2 and Line 8). Not technically in Gangnam-gu but adjacent.

Travel times:

FromTime
Samseong10 min
Yeoksam18 min
Sinsa30 min
Apgujeong25 min

Coupang employees often choose Songpa, Samseong, or southeast Yeoksam.

Pangyo is technically outside Seoul, in Bundang district of Gyeonggi-do. The new tech corridor β€” Naver, Kakao Pay, several gaming companies, NCSoft, and many tech startups β€” is here.

Nearest station: Pangyo (Shinbundang Line β€” express service from central Gangnam).

Travel times:

FromTime
Gangnam (Sinnonhyeon)15 min via Shinbundang express
Yeoksam22 min
Sinsa35 min
Apgujeong35 min
Bundang (Jeongja)8 min

For Pangyo workers, Bundang (Jeongja, Imae, Pangyo) or southern Gangnam (Yangjae, Yeoksam south) make sense. Many Pangyo expats live in Bundang for the shorter commute and better family infrastructure.

LG Twin Towers (Yeouido)

LG HQ is in Yeouido, west of the river. Commute from Gangnam is longer than most.

Nearest station: Yeouido (Line 5, Line 9).

Travel times:

FromTime
Yeoksam30 min via Line 9 (Sapyeong β†’ Yeouido express)
Sinsa30 min
Apgujeong35 min
Yongsan20 min via Line 1
Mapo15 min

For LG employees, Mapo, Yongsan, or Yeouido itself are usually better choices than Gangnam.

The express service to know about

Line 9 has express and local trains. This matters because express service skips most stations and can dramatically cut commute time across the river.

Key express stops on Line 9 in/near Gangnam:

  • Sapyeong (Banpo / south Gangnam access)
  • Sinnonhyeon
  • Eonju
  • Seonjeongneung
  • Sports Complex (Olympic Park)
  • Yeouido (skip 4 local stops)
  • Gimpo Airport (skip 8 local stops)
  • Express Bus Terminal

If your office is near a Line 9 express stop, the express service can shave 10–15 minutes off your commute. Many foreign renters under-use Line 9 because they don't realize it has express trains.

Bus and taxi as supplements

Buses

Seoul's bus network is extensive and runs more frequently than the subway in some corridors. Useful bus routes for Gangnam:

  • Blue buses (κ°„μ„ λ²„μŠ€, 400-series) connect Gangnam to other major districts.
  • Green buses (μ§€μ„ λ²„μŠ€) are local circulators within Gangnam.
  • Red express buses (κ΄‘μ—λ²„μŠ€) connect Seoul to suburban Gyeonggi cities.

Buses are typically slower than the subway during rush hour but more direct for some routes. A Naver Map or Kakao Map app shows real-time bus arrival times and is essential for actually using the bus network.

Taxi

A taxi from Yeoksam to Samseong is about β‚©6,000 and 10 minutes off-peak; double during rush hour. Taxis make sense for:

  • Late-night returns (subway closes around midnight)
  • Cross-river trips when the subway requires multiple transfers
  • Heavy bags or formal-attire commutes
  • Bad weather

Most foreign renters in Gangnam use the subway 80–90% of the time and taxi occasionally.

Choosing a neighborhood from your commute

A rough decision framework based on where you work:

Your officeBest neighborhoodsWorst neighborhoods
Samsung TownSamseong, Yeoksam, CheongdamItaewon, Mapo
Hyundai (Apgujeong)Apgujeong, Sinsa, CheongdamSamseong, Itaewon
Teheran-ro corridorYeoksam, SamseongItaewon, Mapo, Yongsan
Coupang (Jamsil)Songpa, Samseong, southeast YeoksamSinsa, Apgujeong, Mapo
Naver / PangyoBundang (Jeongja, Imae), south GangnamNorth of river (Itaewon, Yongsan)
LG (Yeouido)Mapo, Yeouido, YongsanCheongdam, Apgujeong, Sinsa
Foreign embassy / ItaewonItaewon, Hannam, YongsanCheongdam, Apgujeong, Bundang

If your office is somewhere not on this list, the rule is: pick the neighborhood that puts you within 20 minutes by subway with at most one transfer.

TL;DR

  1. Line 2 is the east-west spine of Gangnam β€” Yeoksam, Seolleung, Samseong.
  2. Line 9 express skips stations and is the fastest cross-Gangnam option for many commutes.
  3. Samsung Town: live in Yeoksam, Samseong, or Cheongdam.
  4. Hyundai (Apgujeong): live in Apgujeong, Sinsa, or Cheongdam.
  5. Teheran-ro corridor: Yeoksam is the default.
  6. Pangyo (Naver, tech): live in Bundang or south Gangnam, use Shinbundang express.
  7. General rule: pick the neighborhood that puts your office within 20 minutes by subway, max one transfer.

Common questions

How long is the commute from Itaewon to Gangnam? About 25 minutes by subway: Line 6 β†’ transfer to Line 2 at Sindang. Door-to-door including walks, typically 30–35 minutes.

What's the best subway line for living in Gangnam? Line 2 if you work along Teheran-ro or at Samsung. Line 3 if you work near Apgujeong or Hyundai. Line 9 express if your office is near a Line 9 express stop.

Should I live in Bundang if I work in Pangyo? Probably yes. Bundang offers shorter commute (under 10 minutes by Shinbundang express to Pangyo), better family infrastructure, and lower rent than central Gangnam. Many tech expats settle here.

How long does it take to cross Gangnam by subway? End-to-end Gangnam (Sinsa to Songpa, for example) is roughly 25–30 minutes including a transfer. Most intra-Gangnam commutes are under 20 minutes.

Are taxis expensive in Gangnam? Moderately. Off-peak: β‚©5,000–10,000 for typical intra-Gangnam trips. During rush hour or surge: 1.5–2x. Many Gangnam expats use taxi as a 10–20% supplement to subway use.

Is the subway crowded during rush hour in Gangnam? Yes, especially Line 2 at Gangnam Station between 8–9 AM and 6–7 PM. Line 9 express is somewhat less crowded than Line 2 during peak hours.
